Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
We are not “seeker sensitive” at Amazing Grace Fellowship, but we are “taker sensitive.” As fishers of men, we fish with an uncommon net for an uncommon catch. “The Lord adds to the ‘catch’ such as should be saved.” AGF is not for everyone, only those that the Lord has caught. Only those big enough for life changing truth are the “takers.” “Big enough” means that a person has become small enough to need the Savior and is humble enough to become a true disciple, denying himself, and taking up his cross and following the Lord Jesus.
Everyone is welcome at Amazing Grace; however, we want you to know that we are fishing for the Master and not ourselves. We are not a religious fellowship but believe in God, who desires personal, life changing relationships with those He has called unto salvation. We don’t “believe in church” or even in “going to church,” we are The Church, the called out assembly by God unto the unique fellowship of the redeemed. We are not interested in professing Christians that are not serious about this relationship with God and building relationships in the family of God. If you will read our Values and Vision, you will get a glimpse of what we are and what we are aspiring to become.
At the core of our beliefs is the Good News that Jesus died and rose again, that by grace, through faith alone, a person receives the full pardon for all his/her sin. This salvation, which was brought to us in time, was planned in Christ, by the decision of God before time began. He predestined that we should be conformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ. This work of God has had enormous impact upon not only our eternal position of full salvation but on our earthly condition as well. The Spirit of God is about the business of sanctifying God’s children, thus producing love, forgiveness, and other essentials for healthy, Christian relationships.
Amazing Grace is not a perfect fellowship of Christians; each one of us, including our pastors, is a flawed human being. We agree with the apostle Paul when he said, “In me, that is in my flesh, dwells no good thing.” Every Christian must stay very much aware that they are but sinners, yet thanks to God, saved by Grace. This helps us to accept one another and love one another as we serve the Lord Jesus with one another. Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” (John 15:16 NKJV). If you’re a “taker,” welcome to Amazing Grace.
A few definitions to consider: Amazing Grace uses some traditional terms to define who or what we are. The danger of using established terminology is that people make conclusions as to meaning and identification.
We use the term “Independent” which could be construed as belonging to a denomination or formal association of independent churches. By “Independent” we mean autonomous as in “self-governing, self-sustaining, and free from hierarchy or denominational control. The body of believers is responsible for the direction (theology and practice) of Amazing Grace, free from all outside intervention except that of its Lord, Jesus Christ.
We call ourselves “Baptist.” Again, the meaning could be taken by those with a preconceived idea into a hundred meanings not intended. We use the term “Baptist” as a definition of specific beliefs that Baptists have held historically. Keeping in mind our definition of “Independent,” we are not part of a movement, association, or convention of Baptists. We are an unaffiliated, local fellowship of believers. We do appreciate and fellowship with those of like convictions (with or without the Baptist tag).
We choose to use the designation “Fellowship” rather than church. The reason being, there is a serious departure in today’s definition of what “church” is. Most think of a building, a type of religious organization, or a service at which they may attend. “Fellowship” better describes the Biblical concept of an assembly of people who have been chosen out of common, unsaved humanity and added to the assembly of the redeemed. The saved make up the congregation, or as it is used in the original Greek text, “Ekklesia,” (the definition is underlined above). We have, as the Ekklesia, been called out of the world to a place of unique Fellowship with God and His people; we are the Fellowship of Christ.
I’ve covered “An Independent Baptist Fellowship,” but why are we Amazing Grace? This is without question the most important part of our definitive name. We are members of this local body of believers, not because we chose to be, but because “the Lord” has added to “the number” of the redeemed “those who were being saved.” (compare the KJV, NIV, and NASB on Acts 2:47).
“The Lord” is the only one responsible for our salvation. No admixture of baptism, rituals, rules, or works of any kind can be attributed to the reason for our redemption. Regeneration came to us through the finished work of Jesus Christ in His substitutionary sacrifice. This was all possible by the election and predestination of our loving, heavenly Father before the world began. This great and complete salvation can be defined by no other expression than Amazing Grace. By this, our Fellowship of believers in Christ is identified; more importantly, because of this, our purpose is to glorify the One that loved us so.
